  • On Sunday May 2, 2010 the Pope Benedict XVI went to Turin on the occasion of the Solemn Shroud Exhibition. During the morning the Pope celebrated the Holy Mass on Piazza San Carlo. In the afternoon he prayed in front of the Shroud for a long time. Then, during the meditation, the Pope termed the Shroud «the Icon of the Holy Saturday», «an Icon written by blood».  The Holy Father said: «Jesus stayed in the sepulchre till the dawn of the day after the Sabbath, and the Shroud of Turin offers us the image of how His body was lying in the tomb during that time, which was short from a chronological point of view (about one day and a half), but it was boundless, infinite in its value and in its meaning». «This is the mystery of the Holy Saturday! Just from there, from the darkness of the Son of God’s death, the light of a new hope dawned: the light of the Resurrection. Well, it seems to me that, when we look at this Holy Linen through the eyes of our faith, we can sense something of this light. In fact, the Shroud was immersed in that deep darkness, but it is bright at the same time».
